SILFRA

Silfra - the freshwater fissure between the continents

Silfra is a unique phenomenon on this planet.

The Silfra Tectonic Fissure is a unique phenomenon on this planet. There are several other freshwater rifts similar to Silfra in Iceland, but Silfra itself is the most beautiful, interesting and easily accessible to recreational divers and snorkelers.

The visibility in Silfra exceeds 100m, making it some of the clearest water in the world, and divers and snorkellers dive and float between the American and Eurasian continental plates. There are even places where they can actually touch both continents at the same time.

These facts, added to the amazingly beautiful underwater landscape of Silfra, made of lave rock, sand and algae, create a great appeal to the recreational diving and snorkelling community all around the world. Many experienced divers come to Iceland with the specific intention to come dive Silfra and experience this amazing site first hand.

This website, sponsored by DIVE.IS, Icelandís first and only PADI 5-Star dive centre, gives you very detailed information on Silfra, which has been rated as one of the Top 5 dive site in the world by many renowned international dive magazines.
